Work is going on as before with a variety of cases. Some more strange than others
It was impossible to examine this 7 year old boy. He was screaming and fighting desperately. The story was that some children had tied a string around his penis some days ago and now the penis looked strange – like a Weises Wurst (“white sausage” - a Bavarian delicatessen).

We took him to the operating theater and gave anesthesia. Only then was it possible to examine properly. The string had cut through the skin and cut of the blood supply, but fortunately only to the foreskin, so it was easy to perform a circumcision.

This was my first and (hopefully) last circumcision in Aira. I am as you know against all forms of genital mutilations and leave it to my operating assistants to carry on with this harmful tradition. The indication for the procedure is routinely registered as “prolonged foreskin” – I routinely correct that indication to “normal foreskin”. But no one listens and no one cares – I am shouting in the desert as usual.
The story with children tying a string on his penis sounds a bit strange. Particularly when you know that the traditional way of performing circumcision in the village is by tying a string and then cutting with a razor blade – no anesthesia, no sterility and no suturing. My guess is that a local circumciser was forced to abandon a circumcision prematurely because of the child’s vigorously resistance.
Do you remember the pregnant poor girl who came in bad general condition with a huge dental abscess? She got a beautiful baby girl by normal delivery, she is staying around with a group of people as poor as herself. She visited the hospital to have the culprit tooth extracted.

Sometimes you wonder how the nursing care – or rather lack of – is implemented. Look at this woman sitting in the corridor of the operating department waiting for her turn. She was send with catheter but no collecting bag, the urine draining free on the floor.

There is still room for improvement. That’s why I am happy for my new three year contract.
