TALECTOMY

In older children and adults with longstanding and advanced deformity Talectomy (removal of the talus bone in the foot) may be the only way to correct the deformity.

The talus is approached through an anterolateral incision pushing anterior vessels and tendons aside. The talar bone is isolated by sharp dissection with a scalpel and lifted out. Then the deformity can be corrected without too much force. The skin is closed and the foot kept in a circular P.O.P for three months.
