ELEPHANTIASIS

Elephantiasis is a disease of the subcutaneous tissue caused by blockage of the lymphatic vessels. Since the lymphatic fluid cannot drain properly it collects in the subcutaneous tissue causing chronic edema. The blockage of the lymphatic vessels can be caused by microfilaria (LoaLoa), malignant growth, radiotherapy, surgical removal, deposits of minerals from the soil (Podoconiosis), or other things.

The underlying cause should be treated if possible. Otherwise the treatment is the same:

·         Elevation of the affected part  - if technically possible

·         Compression of the affected part - if technically possible (by elastic bandages)

·         Surgical correction

The most common affected body parts in our area are:

·         Scrotum

·         Vulva

·         Lower leg
