CHRONIC MAXILLARY SINUSITIS
In case of chronic maxillary sinusitis the surgical procedure is called Caldwell Luc’s operation:
The wall of the maxillary sinus is approached through an intraoral incision. To minimize bleeding a solution containing diluted adrenalin is injected in the submucosa
The thin wall of the sinus is resected and the mucosal lining removed radically
An opening to the nasal cavity is created. If the opening is rather small a tube drain has to be inserted through the opening and retained for some weeks to prevent spontaneously closure. If the opening is large - as in the case shown - this step is not needed.
The mucosal incision is closed with resorbable suture. This step is optional. However air may enter the cavity causing discomfort if the incision is left open.
