CYSTIC HYGROMA

Cystic hygroma is a congenital cystic (containing fluid) tumor which can reach enormous proportions. It is most often found in the face or neck and the axilla. In the newborn it can cause life threatening respiratory obstruction.

A cystic hygroma infiltrates the surrounding structures - major blood vessels and other vital organs – sometimes making the removal very difficult. Fortunately it is not necessary to do a totally radical excision and it is far better to leave a piece of the hygroma on a vital structure rather than vice versa.
