SACROCOCCYGEAL TERATOMA
Sacrococcygeal Teratoma is - as the name implicates - a congenital tumor in the sacrococcygeal region which is of benign character. It usually has a pelvic component which can reach enormous proportions and sometimes causes obstructed labor.
The tumor originates from and is attached to the coxyx which has to be excised with the tumor. It is densely adherent to the thin walled rectum.
The patient is placed in prone position on the operating table. The left index finger (in a right handed surgeon) is inserted in the rectum.
The tumor is approached through an elliptical posterior sagital skin incision with a finger in the rectum to facilitate dissection and avoid unintentional rectal perforation. The coxyx is excised and removed with the tumor.
After removal of the tumor the rectum is inspected for perforations
Skin closure over tube drains completes the procedure
